How to overcome Depression- Talk
Depression is a battle in the mind. An intense feeling of sadness and hopelessness. A kind of insecurity which creeps into your mind and throws you into a deep dungeon of despondency. You are drowned deeper and deeper into the storming sea , with no hope of rising up, where you hear only the noise of the waves and billows and no hope of seeing the light . Yes, you only hear the noise of negative thoughts .
Can a believer be depressed?
In this world whatever is there , it will certainly strike a believer too, but it will not take him, for the Lord lifts him up from the pit of despondency. The king of Israel, David confronts depression in Psalms 42:11-
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
Despite the many blessings and victories Spurgeon experienced, he also suffered much throughout his life and ministry. One of the sufferings he experienced was “causeless depression.” He once said in a sermon, “My spirits were sunk so low that I could weep by the hour like a child, and yet I knew not what I wept for”. If the king of Israel and Prince of preaching suffered depression then surely we are not immune .
We need to accept that depression is very prevalent among us, especially in our younger generation. A Google search will let you know the increasing rate of depression all over the world.
How to deal with depression?
TALK
There are three talks you need to do to overcome depression.
1. Talk to God
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.
Jonah 2:7
We need to pour out our state before God . Talk to Him what you feel and pray to Him for the grace to overcome it . Quiet time with God quiets your storm and fills you with a peace which is beyond understanding.
2. Talk to self
Most of our unhappiness is because we are listening to ourselves rather than talking to ourselves . The moment we start our day we start listening to our thoughts. To overcome our depressing thoughts we need to preach to ourselves. We need to talk God's word and His promises to our self. God's word has immense power to lift you up from the pit of depression. Hope in God, praise His holy name. Praising Him in the midst of your distress will raise you up.
3. Talk to others
In a state of depression a person often feels lonely and helpless. It's a state of mind in which he is unable to explain to others what he feels. Talking to someone whom you trust and someone who would not judge, helps to cast off that heavy burden from a person's heart. Someone who would just listen to you without judging . Someone who would help, and pray with you to overcome your situation.
We learn that it is not any sign you are not a believer if you are cast down in your soul. It is not a new thing for a believer in Christ to be filled with anguish and pour out tears day and night, feeling at times he is alone. The most joyful Christian, the next day, may be plunged into deep distress.
With every evening there will be a morning, with every death there will be a resurrection.
David’s response was the determination to yet praise Him whom he called “my Savior and my God.” God didn’t leave David in his cave of depression and gloom. He eventually led him back home and to the throne.
From the deep, Jonah prayed and God lifted him up. On that cross we have victory over everything . We have His resurrecting power inside us that helps us to overcome everything. May God help us to be victorious. If you know someone who might be depressed please take a step forward and TALK.
