Guard your Heart

Guard your Heart

Above all else, guard your heart
Proverbs 4:23‭
Yes we need to guard our heart more than any treasure of this world. We usually guard what is valuable and costly to us.

This reminds me of a picture of the temple of God in the Old testament ( 1 Chronicles 9 and 2 Chronicles 23) which was guarded by the gatekeepers. I was amazed to see that David appointed  4000 gatekeepers to protect the temple of God( 1 Chronicles 23:5). Much importance was given to protect the temple because

1. They understood the preciousness of the temple of God.

Temple was precious not because of its infrastructure but because of the presence of the most holy God in it.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16
Today we are the temple of God. The most holy God resides in my heart. This heart is precious because God has paid a huge price to turn it from a stony heart to a heart of flesh. Oh if I could grasp the preciousness of this heart , I would be so zealous to guard it.

2. They understood the impact of enemy's attack
He also stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the Lord ’s temple so that no one who was in any way unclean might enter.
2 Chronicles 23:19
One of the main duty of gatekeeper was to protect the temple from any kind of uncleanliness. They knew if the temple gets unholy the most holy God will depart from there. They knew if they don't watch out enemy can intrude the treasuries .

If we want to see the impact of enemy's attack we just need to look at the garden of Eden. The broken relationships, the fall ,the death. Let us guard diligently not allowing anything filthy to enter our heart and not allowing the enemy to steal our treasures in Christ.

 How to guard?
The gatekeepers were stationed at every gate - north ,south ,east ,west. They were armed with weapons. They were watching every moment of the day . One of their duty was to open the gate early in the morning to gaze at the beauty and glory of God.

May God help us to open the gate of our heart early in the morning to gaze at His beauty and
be filled with His words.

As we proceed through our day may we watch through the lens of God's word every moment and discern every attack of enemy and fight it with the armor of God .

May God help us to guard every gate which leads to our heart-

Eye gate
Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.
Psalms 119:37
Watch what you watch. Let our eyes be fixed on Jesus alone.

Ear gate
Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.
Proverbs 2:2
Let our ears hear the word of God and not the lies of Satan.

Thought gate

Set your minds on things above ,not on earthly things.
Colossians 3:2
Let us not allow any filthy thoughts to intrude our mind. Let us be mindful of the things of God.

Mouth gate
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Ephesians 4:29
Let our words be acceptable to God and for building others.

May God help us to understand the preciousness of this heart . May we put every effort to guard it from the enemy.
